According to a recent analysis published on Semiengineering.com, the cybersecurity capabilities of Large Language Models have advanced significantly in recent months. Current frontier models, such as Claude Mythos and OpenAI GPT 5.5, when equipped with proper tooling, now possess cybersecurity skills comparable to those of trained human practitioners, and their ability is doubling every four months. Although access to these frontier models has been limited, independent researchers have discovered that open weight models, which are freely available, can achieve similar results.

It has long been understood that software and firmware frequently contain bugs, some of which create security vulnerabilities. Artificial intelligence tools can now be used to rapidly locate and exploit these weaknesses. On the positive side, defenders can also leverage this capability. Companies that develop software and firmware are increasingly employing AI to accelerate the identification and remediation of vulnerabilities within their own code.

Within a few years, it may be possible to achieve a significantly higher level of security with more robust software and firmware. However, the intervening period is expected to see elevated numbers of vulnerability alerts, software updates, and security breaches.

Several opportunities exist to mitigate this risk. First, consumers and device manufacturers should adopt the Matter standard. This Smart Home interoperability standard was designed with security as a primary focus, incorporating Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) principles to protect IoT devices from infection and to limit damage if a device is compromised. For instance, each Matter device receives only the minimal set of privileges it requires, implementing the Principle of Least Privilege (PoLP), so an infected light bulb with low privileges cannot cause extensive harm.

Second, device makers should safeguard critical secrets, such as encryption keys, by using chips with certified security. Many of Infineon’s OPTIGA and PSOC products hold widely recognized security certifications, including SESIP, PSA, and Common Criteria. These certifications provide device makers with assurance that the products have been thoroughly evaluated by independent security experts.

Third, the software update process must be accelerated. Device manufacturers should streamline their procedures for deploying software updates to stay ahead of attackers. Consumers should promptly install these updates to keep their smart homes protected against the latest threats.

While media coverage has concentrated on the risks associated with AI’s growing cybersecurity capabilities, it has generally overlooked the advantages AI offers to defenders. More importantly, specific recommendations for addressing this problem have been provided only sparingly. This analysis aims to equip readers with the tools needed to manage this risk.
