VALLEJO – The city of Vallejo confirmed on Friday that “a malicious hacking incident” occurred this week when unauthorized individuals were able to send an email via the city’s email management platform, Constant Contact.
The fraudulent email, titled “something awaits,” was sent at about 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 4. Masquerading as an official communication from the well‑known jewelry company, Tiffany and Co., the email invited persons to click on a link found within the email. The email originated from the city’s info@cityofvallejo.net address.

“The city’s Information Technology Department is actively investigating the breach to determine how the intrusion occurred and to assess its overall impact,” officials said in Friday’s press release about the incident. “At this time, there is no indication of any risk to the public or compromise of personal data stored within Constant Contact. The city is taking all necessary steps to ensure the continued protection of all information maintained on the platform.”
Officials advised persons who received the email to delete it.
“No further action is required,” they added.
This incident comes a month past the 10-year anniversary of when the city caused its own data breach after inadvertently releasing employee social security numbers in response to a public records request from Transparent California in May 2016.
Transparent California had requested employee salary information.
The city released the protected information in May 2016 but didn’t provide notice to the employees until five months later in October 2016. In response, the city arranged to have a company protect the affected employees’ identities for 24 months at no cost to the employees.
