A ransomware attack targeted Evanston Township High School District 202, Superintendent Marcus Campbell announced in a Sunday evening email to students and families.
In response, ETHS will be closed through Tuesday. Until then, all on-campus activities, including Summer School classes and sports camps, have been cancelled.
Campbell wrote the attack has impacted access to “district systems, internet services, and computer infrastructure,” including ETHS’ phone systems and district Google accounts. The incident has also affected school resources like PowerSchool’s Home Access Center.
After learning about the attack, the district initiated its “incident response procedures” and contacted external attorneys and cybersecurity experts “to assist with the investigation and recovery process,” the superintendent wrote.
“We are working with these specialists to determine precisely what information may have been accessed or acquired and to restore normal systems operations as quickly as possible,” Campbell wrote. “The district is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) as part of the ongoing investigation.”
According to the district’s website, all staff Google passwords have been reset as a precautionary measure. Campbell wrote the district “will provide further updates regarding the schedule for the remainder of the week.”
