Evanston Township High School cancels summer classes due to ransomware attack | #ransomware | #cybercrime

EVANSTON, Ill. (WGN) — A high school in the northern suburbs has canceled all summer classes for two days due to a ransomware attack.

Evanston Township High School announced that the attack on Sunday has disrupted district systems, internet services and computer infrastructure.

Due to the incident, Evanston Township High School will be closed Monday and Tuesday — and all summer school classes, sports camps and other campus activities are cancelled.

ETHS says that phone systems are unavailable, and staff may have limited access to email during this time.

“The breach also impacted our critical functions in the building, like (the) emergency notification system and our phone lines are down,” said Reine Hanna, ETHS Director of Communications. “We did not feel comfortable having students in the building with these systems not functioning.”

The school’s spokesperson said the district’s IT team activated its emergency response as soon as the disruption was detected. Forensic cybersecurity specialists, legal advisors and other experts are investigating the breach.

Right now, the focus is on determining just how far the attack reached and whether any sensitive information was accessed or stolen.

So far, district officials have said they have not received any specific ransom demands related to the incident. They hope to reopen campus on Wednesday.

A message on the school’s website reads, in part:

“We are working with these specialists to determine precisely what information may have been accessed or acquired and to restore normal systems operations as quickly as possible. The district is cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) as part of the ongoing investigation.”
