UTICA, N.Y. — Community groups are bringing scam prevention resources to local seniors with two awareness sessions in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The Oneida County Office for the Aging and 50 Forward Mohawk Valley announced that the sessions will be held June 15 at two locations: from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Parkway Recreation Center, 220 Memorial Parkway, Utica, and from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 6734 NY St. Rt. 13, Verona Beach.

Guest speakers will discuss common scams and ways to protect credit.

Educational materials will be available at both events.

The sessions will also cover how to recognize scams and what steps to take if targeted.

Oneida County has also partnered with the New York State Office for the Aging and SilverShield to help seniors verify suspicious messages and calls.

Adults 60 and older can get a free SilverShield subscription by calling Dawn Piccione at 315-798-5456.

Since launching SilverShield in May, the County has identified 23 scams, saving an estimated $20,700.

“Education about scams is an important part of protecting the community from financial exploitation,” Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said. “Each year, the scams get more complex, and more older adults fall victim. These sessions will provide valuable information that will arm our elder population with the ammunition they need to fight back.”
