Apple previewed a new set of child safety tools aimed at giving parents more control over what children can see, who they can contact and when they can use apps.

“Our approach to helping families create safer digital experiences is grounded in the belief that every child is unique,” Sumbul Desai, M.D., Apple Vice President of Health and Fitness, said in the company’s June 8 announcement.

The updates, which Apple says will arrive this fall with iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, include a simpler setup experience for child accounts, Ask to Browse, Time Allowances and a redesigned Screen Time. Apple said the tools build on existing parental controls while giving families more flexible ways to shape a child’s digital habits.

A child account remains the starting point for Apple’s family safety system. The company said the account enables age-based safeguards, including restrictions on adult websites, age-appropriate media and App Store limits.

Parents will be able to begin a child’s device experience with only essential apps, a recommended starter set or a custom list of approved apps. They can then expand access later through Ask to Buy, which already requires parental approval for App Store downloads and in-app purchases.

The new Ask to Browse feature extends that approval model to the web. Apple said children can be required to ask permission before opening a new website in Safari, with the feature working across iPhone, iPad and Mac.

Apple also said parents can manage who children contact through Messages, FaceTime and Phone. When children want to communicate with someone new, parents can require approval before that contact is added.

Communication Safety, which already blurs nudity detected in Messages and FaceTime calls for users under 18, will also intervene when shared images or videos contain gore or violent content. Apple said User Reporting Tools that allow reports of harmful content directly to Apple will expand globally.

Time Allowances will let parents manage app use across categories such as Entertainment, Games and Social Media. Apple said the setup will include guidance based on expert research and tailored to a child’s age, while still allowing parents to adjust limits for their own household.

The redesigned Screen Time will show parents an at-a-glance view of average device use and most-used apps. Apple said parents will be able to limit access during meals, outdoor play or other family moments, and also extend time when a child needs a little longer to finish something.

For families, the strongest part of Apple’s announcement is not that technology can solve every parenting challenge. It is the admission that children need boundaries, habits and adult guidance before a glowing screen becomes the loudest voice in the room.
