A community near Bakersfield is up in arms by the prospect of a sexually violent predator moving in next to them.
Nearly 100 residents of Hart Flat crammed into a helicopter hangar to formulate a game plan after a state doctor said William Wilson, a twice-convicted child molester, is ready to be released from prison.
“No community wants to house someone like this,” resident Mish Barbara-Way told KGET. “That’s the bottom line. No community wants to have someone like this. That’s the unfortunate reality.
“But we just have to protect us right now. And I wish that he could stay behind bars or be somewhere else. But unfortunately, that’s not the way it’s happening.”
Another resident of Hart Flat is concerned that their young son will be exposed to the child predator, who was convicted of child molestation in 1981 and 1991.
“Our pool faces his windows, so he wouldn’t even have to leave his house to be able to see directly my children playing, you know, their friends swimming in the pool, them in the pool as outside,” resident Leslie Martin said.
“It’s just way too close for comfort. And I don’t think anyone would want that in their backyard, to be honest.”
“And an almost three-year-old son. His birthday would be two days after the hearing. So instead of spending his third birthday planning, I would be at a hearing for a pedophile, quite literally in my backyard,” Martin said.
District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer and County Supervisor Chris Parlier also showed up to the meeting.
“The state wants to put a sexual predator in the small community of Keene, and I’m going to do everything in my power as a supervisor in partnership with the district attorney, make sure that doesn’t happen,” Parlier said.
The community plans to write a letter to the courts explaining why Wilson should not live there, including that children could be threatened.
Wilson’s placement hearing is set for July 16.
