A Southwest Florida man is suing Jacksonville Beach police over a disproven child-predator charge the lawsuit blames on faulty facial-recognition software and bad police work.

Lawyers for Robert Dillon, a 52-year-old commercial crabber in Lee County who the suit says had never set foot in Jacksonville Beach, filed his civil case June 10 in Fort Myers federal court.

The suit says Dillon was arrested at his home and accused of trying to get a girl under age 12 to leave a Beaches McDonald’s with him in 2023 because software used by police across the state wrongly matched grainy video of the predator at the restaurant to a photo of him it had on file.
