Ongoing issues related to a ransomware incident at Evanston Township High School have forced the relocation of an ACT exam that was scheduled to take place Saturday. The test will now be administered at Lane Tech High School in Chicago.
The school experienced a ransomware attack Sunday, forcing it to shut down for two days. Summer school, sports camps and all other on-campus activities resumed Wednesday but the district’s recovery efforts are ongoing, according to school spokesperson Reine Hanna.
“Campus continues to operate with limited functionality while restoration work continues,” she said.
The school’s website showed Friday that phone lines continued to be down.
Hanna also added that the majority of students scheduled to take the ACT Saturday were not ETHS students.
In its announcement first disclosing the attack on Sunday, the school said once it discovered the attack it activated its incident response procedures and contacted outside cybersecurity attorneys and forensic experts to investigate. The school also said it is cooperating with the FBI during the investigation. The FBI declined to confirm or deny it was investigating.
Ransomware is a type of malicious software that blocks access to a computer system or data and demands a ransom for its release. The school has not disclosed whether any demand was made or satisfied.
