24th annual Senior Expo gives scam warnings in Alexandria – Alexandria Echo Press | #datingscams #romancescams


ALEXANDRIA

— St. Mary’s Education Center in Alexandria was a busy place to be on Wednesday, June 17.

That’s because it was the site of the 24th annual Senior Expo.

The event featured vendor booths and education sessions on avoiding financial scams.

In addition to speakers, the Senior Expo also featured informational booths from a variety of organizations.

The keynote speaker was Bill Raker, with the AARP Fraud Watch Network.

Breakout sessions included:

  • How Banks Help You Avoid Fraud, with Courtney Olson, bank fraud specialist with Viking Bank.
  • Justice 101, with Sarah Moore, attorney with Justice North (formerly Legal Services of Northwest Minnesota) for 24 years.
  • Law Enforcement — Local Trends, with Detective Alec Swanson of the Alexandria Police Department, and Investigator Nathan Larson of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. 
  • Online, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Scams, with Luke Elliot, outreach coordinator at the Douglas County Library.
  • Douglas County Senior Services, with Bonnie Bina, senior coordinator with Douglas County Senior Services.

The event was hosted by Douglas County Senior Services, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Alexandria Police Department.

Sponsors included St. Croix Hospice, Douglas County Veteran Services and Vistaprairie at Windmill Ponds.
