Montenegrin police and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have arrested an Iranian national suspected of carrying out hacking attacks that caused an estimated $3.4 billion in damage to US infrastructure, according to Montenegro’s police, News.Az reports, citing Al Jazeera.
The 39-year-old suspect, who holds dual Iranian and Turkish citizenship, is wanted by the Southern District Court of New York on charges including conspiracy to commit computer fraud, hacking and identity theft.
Montenegrin police said in a statement that the suspect had carried out large-scale hacking operations since 2013, targeting more than 150 universities across the United States and causing losses estimated at more than $3.4 billion.
The man was arrested on Thursday in the Adriatic coastal resort city of Kotor, according to Montenegro’s police directorate.
