SANFORD, Maine (WGME) – A confrontation between a man and a group of teenagers in Sanford was captured on video and shared on social media, prompting a police investigation.
Police say they responded to Number One Pond on Front Street on June 25 following reports of an assault involving a nab and several teens.
When officers arrived, the man had already left the scene. Officers spoke with witnesses and the teens involved before later contacting the man as part of the investigation.
According to police, the teens were riding bicycles downhill on Front Street when they allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the roadway, causing the man, who was driving a vehicle, to brake suddenly.
The man exited his vehicle, and a verbal confrontation ensued.
During the confrontation, police say the man allegedly threw one of the bicycles into Number One Pond, which then escalated into a physical fight.
Video of the incident was recorded and posted to TikTok on June 26. The video shows teenage boys punching and kicking the man during the fight.
The video was later shared on a Sanford community Facebook page but appears to have since been removed.
There is no word yet on if anyone will be charged.
“Investigators believe this was an isolated incident stemming from a traffic-related confrontation. There is no indication that this was a random act of violence or that there is an ongoing threat to the public,” said Sanford Deputy Chief of Police Matthew Gagné.
