VPNs, fake IDs: How UK teens plan to bypass social media ban  | #childpredator | #onlinepredator | #sextrafficing

After the United Kingdom announced stricter social media ban for users under 16, online conversations have quickly shifted on how the rules can be bypassed once they are fully enforced.

Teenagers are already finding simple digital methods that could be used to access restricted platforms. These methods rely on common tools already available on most devices and apps.

In this article, Tribune Online looks at the methods being discussed around bypassing the upcoming social media ban.

VPNs used to change location

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) are one of the most common tools. A VPN hides   a user’s real location by routing internet traffic through servers in other countries. This makes it appear as though the user is browsing from outside the United Kingdom. Since many restrictions are based on location rules, VPNs can allow users to appear outside the UK, which may help to bypass some access limits.

Fake identity details for access

Another method involves the use of fake or altered identity information during account setup or age verification. Some platforms may require users to submit personal details or identification before granting access.

In response, incorrect or modified information could be used to pass these checks, including altering date of birth details or using identity information that does not belong to the user.

These actions are against platform rules but are part of the methods being shared online.

Burner accounts and secondary profiles

Burner accounts are temporary  accounts created using new emails, phone numbers or devices. They are often separate from a user’s main identity and are used to quickly create new access points after restrictions are applied.

With burner accounts, users can repeatedly open new profiles, making it harder for platforms to fully control access under one identity.

Changing settings and basic workarounds

Some also focus on simple changes made directly on devices or apps. Users switch app regions to match other countries, using alternative app stores to download versions of apps that may not have the same restrictions, and creating new email addresses during registration to avoid linking accounts to existing identities.

In some cases, users also consider resetting or changing device-related identifiers where possible to avoid detection across multiple accounts.

Use of multiple devices and browsers

Another method  involves switching between different devices, browsers or app versions.

By using multiple devices or clearing browser data, users can create new access points that are not linked to previous accounts. This allows repeated attempts to access restricted platforms without relying on a single identity.
