The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of phone scams targeting the elderly.
Scammers pretending to be law enforcement officers claim that the call recipient has an active warrant and need to bring money to the law enforcement agency or send money to avoid being arrested, according to the sheriff’s office.
The Sheriff’s Office wants residents to know that law enforcement agencies will never call you to tell you that you have a warrant.
They also will not ask for payment over the phone or ask for payment using gift cards, prepaid cards, crypto currency or any other form of payment to avoid arrest.
The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office advises residents to hang up immediately and do not provide any personal information over the phone if they receive one of these calls.
