Somaliland Foreign Ministry website hacked amid tensions over Israel ties

Hargeisa (HOL) — Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation website was hacked by an unidentified group that posted images of officials from Yemen’s Houthi movement, including spokesman Yahya Saree.

Neither the Somaliland government nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has publicly commented on the incident.

There has been no official statement identifying who was behind the attack or explaining how the ministry’s website was accessed.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions after Houthi officials issued repeated threats against Somaliland over its growing ties with Israel.

However, there is no official evidence linking Houthis to the website breach.

The Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, are an armed movement in Yemen. Since the start of the Gaza war, the group has targeted ships linked to Israel and US in the Red Sea and other waters, saying its actions are in support of Palestinians.

Somaliland has drawn regional attention in recent weeks following reports of diplomatic and security ties with Israel, which have sparked criticism and condemnation from several countries and groups in the region.

The Houthis are among those that have publicly opposed Somaliland’s ties with Israel.

It remains unclear whether the hacking of the Foreign Ministry website was a political cyberattack linked to those tensions.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about the security of government digital systems in the region, where similar breaches have previously targeted public institutions, including Somalia’s immigration system.
