A schoolteacher was hacked with a machete, allegedly by a student’s mother, in Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj today after a dispute over tuition fees.
Sithi Simitha, 28, is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after suffering 10 blows to her head and losing a finger during the attack, police said.
The incident took place at the student’s house in Panaullahrchar village under Shibpur union around Monday morning when Sithi went there to teach and later asked the family for her pending tuition money.
Later, locals caught the alleged attacker, Priya Begum, 25, and handed her over to police. She is the wife of Bayezid Mia, a businessman from the same area.
Priya was produced before a court in the afternoon after Sithi’s husband, Shishu Mia, filed a case with Bhairab Police Station accusing her of attempted murder, said Emdadul Kabir, a sub-inspector of the police station.
The court later sent Priya to Kishoreganj jail, the police official said.
Quoting family members, SI Emdadul Kabir said Sithi, who teaches at a local private school, had also been tutoring one of Priya’s children for three months. She was paid Tk 1,500 per month for the tutoring.
A few days ago, Sithi asked for her tuition fees, which angered Priya, the SI said.
He said Sithi went to teach the student on Monday morning and, just before she left after finishing the lesson, Priya allegedly locked the door and attacked her with a machete. Sithi could not escape despite her attempts as the door was locked.
Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued her.
She was first taken to Bhairab Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as her condition deteriorated.
The SI said Sithi suffered injuries across her body, including damage to seven fingers and the loss of another. Citing doctors, he said she sustained 10 stab wounds to the head and required 50 stitches.
Sithi’s husband, Shishu Mia, alleged that the attack was carried out with the intention of killing her and stealing her gold ornaments. He also claimed that Priya had been involved in similar incidents in the past.
SI Emdadul Kabir said police were investigating whether there were any other motives behind the attack.
