“Please notify the jail of bad Wi-Fi.”
That was the message we received in an email from a group of hackers calling themselves Breach Boyz World Wide.
Attached to the email was a list of nearly 30 current inmates at the jail along with private information like driver’s license numbers, home addresses and Social Security numbers.
“This is almost unbelievable,” said Caitlyn. Her number was listed as one of the contacts for the inmates, her husband, so we called her to verify if the Social Security number listed was accurate.
“This is terrifying because there’s so much that can be done with that,” she said.
Caitlyn, we learned, also had reason to be worried about her own information.
“I’m also worried that my actual name might be in there because I literally just got out of the same county jail yesterday,” she said.
We reached out to the Sheriff’s office who told us, ‘We’re taking it very seriously. Taking to steps to mitigate any further access to the system. Notified the OSBI.’
We also reached out to the hackers with some questions. They answered with broken English, but you can make out what they’re saying.
What country are you in?
“We house inside of Northern Iran.”
When did you first hack the jail?
“Early March.”
How did you do the hack?
“We pull into parking lot, send someone inside with Wi-Fi mapping computer in pocket, our war driving software/hardware is house made and capture all we need. Take us 2 hours from start to finish. Must rotate cars to not seem suspension (suspicious).”
They said they’ve got a crew of 32 people and that they’ve hacked 134 jail and DOC systems in the USA.
With this particular hack they aren’t demanding a ransom, saying they wanted to notify someone to save the inmate’s reputation since they have a hard time already.
Is this how you make a living?
“I make money sell to govt around the world information they need. But do not want to like to target small individual. I can demand 40,000 USA on dark web for this types of data not a problem. I have over 1.2 million of this social information just from jail hack. I can sell for $2 each to broker and will pay because broke sell for $50.”
“I’m trying to wrap my head around this and it’s very hard for me to,” said Caitlyn.
Hacked behind bars, with the hackers choosing to speak out instead of cashing in.
