RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Pennington County government is responding to a cybersecurity incident that has affected parts of its network, although critical services remain available.

Most public-facing offices will be closed Monday, July 6, as a result of the incident. However critical life safety services such as 911 dispatch, the Pennington County jail and juvenile services center, and other public safety operations continue. So do court operations and the 24-7 program. The county auditor’s office will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday for in-person absentee ballot voting in the July 28 gubernatorial run-off election. And while the treasurer’s office will not be open for in-person transactions, vehicle registration services do remain available online at

or at self-service kiosks.

A county spokesperson says that as of Sunday afternoon, Pennington County was still working to determine the full scope of the incident. Government officials are working with the South Dakota National Guard Cyber Incident Response Team, the South Dakota Fusion Center, the Cyber Infrastructure Security Agency, and other partners. They say they expect to provide a public update by late Monday morning.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
