An Illinois man has been sentenced for hacking hundreds of female college students’ Snapchat accounts, including accounts belonging to Colby College students.
Federal prosecutors said 27-year-old Kyle Svara hacked nearly 600 Snapchat accounts in 2020 and 2021.
Among the compromised accounts were those belonging to Colby College students in Waterville.
Prosecutors said Svara downloaded sexually explicit images from at least 59 women and later sold or traded the images online.
A federal judge sentenced Svara to six years and four months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
Svara pleaded guilty in February to fraud charges and admitted to lying about collecting child sexual abuse material.
