ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) — Chemung County District Attorney Weeden Wetmore is cautioning senior citizens and their caregivers about telehealth scams targeting Medicare recipients.
Scammers are exploiting the rise of remote healthcare visits to obtain Medicare information, then billing for services or equipment patients never requested.
The DA’s office says red flags include unrequested monitoring equipment arriving in the mail, unsolicited offers for “free” telehealth services and unfamiliar charges appearing on Medicare statements.
Residents are advised never to share their Medicare number with unsolicited callers and to use telehealth services only through their own physician. Officials also urge seniors to review their Medicare Summary Notices (MSN) carefully for any charges they do not recognize.
Anyone who suspects Medicare fraud is urged to contact the New York State Senior Medicare Patrol at 800-333-4374 or report it to local law enforcement.
