HARRISON, Ark. (KY3) – Detectives in Harrison are working to identify sex offenders and other criminals through internet-based investigations, according to law enforcement.
Detective Ted Schaeffer founded the cybercrime division and has worked cases involving scammers and pedophiles by reviewing reports and data.
Investigations can take years
Schaeffer said the work differs from how cybercrime is portrayed on television and in movies, noting that investigations can take years to complete.
He said the majority of cases his division handles involve exploitation.
What parents can do
Schaeffer offered guidance for parents looking to protect their children online.
“Kids don’t need to be on social media just because of what we deal with,” Schaeffer said. “However, if they are in those applications, there needs to be no fear between the child and the parent. The child needs to be not afraid to report it to their parent. I do have some of those that the kids immediately went to their parent.”
Schaeffer said anyone who believes a child is being exploited should report the behavior and have an open conversation with the child.
