The State is set to call 38 witnesses when the trial gets underway next year. Prosecutors say the killing spree began in Imbali Township 2022.
A security company boss accused of murdering seven people will spend the remainder of the year behind bars as his trial is now only set to begin in February.
Sibusiso Bruce Mhongo is also charged with conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of attempted murder.
Mhlongo was in the Pietermaritzburg High Court for a pre-trial conference on Thursday.
The court has certified the murder case ready for trial.

According to the State, Mhlongo wanted his company, Njoms Security to be contracted to provide security services for Kwa-Pata Taxi Association.
It says when this did not happen, Mhlongo suspect a taxi industry safety official – Mduduzi Shezi – of having blocked his company from getting the tender.
Prosecutors say Mhlongo then began his killing spree, starting with Shezi, who was murdered alongside his girlfriend Nonhlanhla Ndaba.
The pair was killed while travelling in the Imbali Township in May 2022.
The hit was followed by five others, including people Shezi allegedly accused of selling him out to the police.
The State is set to call 38 witnesses at trial.
