Heavy influx of complaints and lack of adequate personnel for investigations have forced the Tamil Nadu Police Department to request the State government to upgrade several cybercrime stations as ‘heavy stations’.
Commissioner of Police N. Kannan said the Coimbatore city cybercrime station is among the stations that have been sought to be upgraded to ‘heavy stations’. He said that a heavy police station will have a strength of 80 personnel.
According to the police, the city cybercrime station currently has one Inspector and 10 personnel, whereas even police stations in the ‘light’ category have a sanctioned strength of 30 personnel. The sanctioned strength is 50 for a station in the ‘medium’ category.
The cybercrime station in the city has received around 6,000 complaints so far this year, out of which 5,000 were related to financial crimes – fraudulent transactions and cheating on cyberspace. Of the 5,000 complaints involving loss of money, 4,000 accounted for loss of over ₹1 lakh. The station registered a little over 70 First Information Reports (FIR) so far this year, the police said.
As per official data, residents from Coimbatore city reported losses to the tune of a whopping ₹87.16 crore in various modes of cybercrimes in 2025. The city cybercrime station received a total of 9,960 complaints in 2025, of which 7,779 involved fraudulent financial transactions and online cheating.
