SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – The Missouri chapter of Women for Gun Rights hosted a school safety summit Thursday at the Hatch Auditorium in the Springfield-Greene County Library Center.
Presenter Ed Monk, an Army veteran, former deputy and former high school teacher, has spent nearly two decades studying how to minimize victims during active shooter situations. Monk is the founder of Last Resort Training and a strong advocate for school safety officers — employees authorized to carry firearms on campus and trained to respond to violent attacks.
Monk said even a rapid police response takes several minutes, time a shooter can use to harm more people.
“In the first minute of an attack, the average active shooter is going to shoot a new victim every three to five seconds,” Monk said. “So the only way, knowing that, the only way to cause a low victim count, and everybody says they want a low victim count, he has to be stopped in the first 30 seconds to have a mathematical expectation of a low victim count. And so it’s very obvious, but it’s very uncomfortable because what that says is the victims have to stop it. We can’t wait on the cops.”
Evening presentation open to public
Monk’s evening presentation began at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the same location. The presentation was geared toward school employees but was free and open to the public.
