China’s top internet regulator has unveiled a sweeping draft law to crack down on cyberbullying, targeting major tech platforms with hefty fines if they fail to police abusive content and introducing new legal avenues for victims to seek police intervention.

Released Wednesday by the Cyberspace Administration of China and other government agencies, the draft Anti-Cyberbullying Law marks Beijing’s most comprehensive effort to curb rampant online harassment. The proposal mandates that internet companies proactively monitor risks, restrict algorithmic recommendations of abusive content and assist victims with evidence collection.
