Vigilante groups targeting alleged child predators and other criminals are being warned of the impact their work could have on Garda investigations.
One such group says on Facebook they are there to ‘help protect every child’ across Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Video footage circulating online has seen the groups confronting alleged child predators.
A Facebook page for one of the groups said: ‘What happens in the darkness must always be brought into the light, because every child deserves safety, justice, and a voice.’
The Connacht Tribune report that a ‘sting’ operation was carried out against a Galway man last week.
Footage online has been shared widely and sees allegations put towards the man.
Gardaí have previously said the work of such vigilante groups has the potential to lead to violence and/or cause harm.
They stated it was their role to investigate crimes and enforce enacted legislation.
They added the work of these groups could also impact future criminal proceedings.
Galway Beo report the force previously said: ‘There are concerns over the legality of the actions and the manner in which such groups operate, and how they interact with their chosen targets prior to and during the arranged meeting has the potential to affect future criminal proceedings.’
