BRAINERD — People’s Security Company, a subsidiary of Crow Wing Power, announced its monitored security customer accounts are transitioning to Heartland Security, a cooperatively owned security provider based in Melrose, Minnesota. The move ensures customers across the region continue to receive the same trusted, local protection they have relied on for years, now backed by an even broader cooperative network.
At the same time, People’s Security’s parent company is becoming an owner of Heartland Security, joining 13 other electric cooperatives across Minnesota and Iowa. The move allows Crow Wing Power to focus fully on its core mission of delivering reliable electric service, while its affiliate retains a direct ownership stake in a security provider built on the same cooperative values that have guided People’s Security since its founding, the company reported in a news release.
“This is not People’s Security stepping away from the community we have served for so many years. It’s the opposite. We are making sure that service continues and grows stronger by partnering with an organization that shares our commitment to the people who depend on us. Heartland Security operates the same way we do, locally, personally, and cooperatively. Our customers will be in good hands,” said Tim Thompson, CEO of People’s Security Company and Crow Wing Power, in a news release.
Choosing to join the Heartland Security ownership group keeps decisions and support in cooperative hands, the company reported. It gives Crow Wing Power a continued stake in a security provider owned by electric cooperatives and rooted in the same member-first philosophy that has shaped its own history, the company reported.

We are honored that People’s Security Company has entrusted us with that responsibility, and we look forward to welcoming their customers with the same local, personal service they have come to expect,” said Jess Duncan, president of Heartland Security.
For People’s Security customers, the transition means uninterrupted alarm monitoring, continued access to experienced local technicians, and the same responsive support they have always received. Heartland Security will communicate directly with customers in the coming weeks with details about billing, account access, and any other questions that come up along the way.
Heartland Security has provided residential and commercial security services across Minnesota and Iowa since 1999. Managed by Wright-Hennepin Electric Cooperative and based in Melrose, it is now owned by 14 electric cooperatives, including Crow Wing Power, all committed to keeping decisions and support close to home.
This transition reflects Crow Wing Power’s continued focus on its core mission of providing safe, reliable electric service. By joining the Heartland Security ownership group rather than exiting the security business altogether, Crow Wing Power is putting the cooperative principles into action, keeping security services in cooperative hands and centered on community need, the company stated.
