The State of New York has announced a $9 million investment to strengthen the cybersecurity of municipal water systems, reflecting growing concerns over the increasing number of cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure across the United States. The funding is intended to help local water utilities improve their digital defenses and safeguard essential services that millions of residents depend on every day.
The announcement comes amid reports that more than 30 water systems across 12 U.S. states have experienced cyber incidents in recent years. These attacks have highlighted the vulnerabilities of water treatment and distribution facilities, many of which rely on interconnected operational technology and information technology systems. Recognizing the importance of securing these essential services, New York is directing the grants toward municipalities involved in nearly 150 water infrastructure projects that are expected to be completed by the end of next year.

Although officials continue to monitor evolving threats, cybersecurity agencies emphasize that organizations should focus on strengthening defenses against all forms of cyber risk rather than concentrating on any single threat actor.
To address these challenges, both the United States and the United Kingdom have been encouraging public and private sector organizations to adopt stronger cybersecurity measures. Recommendations include implementing multi-factor authentication, regularly updating software, segmenting operational networks, conducting employee awareness training, and maintaining robust incident response plans.
