On August 8, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Signal Corps and Cybersecurity Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Learn how this holiday came to be, why the work of military signal corps personnel is critically important during wartime, and what role they play in the country’s cybersecurity
Every year on August 8, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the Signal Corps and Cybersecurity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine — a professional holiday for service members who ensure reliable communication between units, are responsible for the operation of military communications, and defend the country against cyberattacks.
In modern warfare, their work is of strategic importance. The effectiveness of troop command, the execution of combat missions, and, ultimately, the preservation of the lives of Ukrainian defenders depend on uninterrupted communications, the rapid exchange of information, and the resilience of the digital infrastructure.

The History of Ukraine’s Communications and Cybersecurity Forces Day
The history of Ukraine’s communications forces dates back to 1917, when a communications department was established within the Ukrainian General Military Staff. It was headed by the future General-Horunzhiy, then Colonel Oleksandr Kozma.
Later, special radiotelegraph units operated within army corps during the era of Pavlo Skoropadskyi’s Ukrainian State. A dedicated communications department also functioned during the period of the Directory of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.
The professional holiday was officially established in 2000 by Decree No. 154/2000 of Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, “On Communications Troops Day.” The decree stated that the holiday was established “in recognition of the contributions of the communications troops to strengthening the state’s defense capabilities.”
The date of August 8 was not chosen at random. It was on this day in 1920 in Kyiv, at the former Kostyantynivka Military Cadet School, that training for military signal corps personnel began at the Kyiv Military Engineering Courses.

What role do military signal corps personnel and cybersecurity specialists play during wartime?
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, the importance of signal corps units has only grown. In conditions where the operational situation can change in a matter of minutes, reliable and stable communication between headquarters, commanders, and combat units is one of the key conditions for the successful execution of combat missions.
At the same time, modern warfare has long extended beyond the battlefield. Alongside traditional combat operations, a large-scale cyber conflict is also underway. That is why military signal corps personnel are responsible not only for the operation of communications systems but also for the protection of Ukraine’s information resources.
Information technology specialists serving in the signals and cybersecurity units counter Russian cyberattacks, defend Ukraine’s digital infrastructure, and carry out operations against hostile government and propaganda websites.
Behind every successful Ukrainian military operation lies the work of hundreds of people who ensure communication, information security, and uninterrupted command and control of the troops.
That is why, on this day, we thank our service members for their dedication, professionalism, and contribution to the defense of our country!
