Lanzarote Fishing School: no security due to bankruptcy of the awarded company

The company in charge of the security of the Fisheries School of Lanzarote, Security Services Kuo, entered into receivership and liquidation last June. 

At the end of July, the company informed its workers, around 1,300 throughout Spain, that they should not report to their jobs from August 1st. 

Workers of the security company in Lanzarote, who are to be subrogated with the future contract, report to La Voz that “overnight, a center that houses navigation simulators, technological workshops, and material of high economic value and strategic importance has been left completely unprotected, without physical surveillance or access control“. 

Thus, they consider, “not only public assets are put at risk, but also the daily security of students and staff”.

They also publicly thank “the maximum collaboration, involvement, and proactivity of the center’s management, which has been responsible for drafting and sending the new tender documents and has already held multiple meetings with various security companies on the island to find an immediate solution to this crisis”.

“However, the center’s management’s effort hits a wall of bureaucracy,” they denounce. 

“No matter how many solutions the director puts on the table, the activation of an emergency surveillance service depends strictly on the authorization and validation of the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries,” they explain.

This newspaper has contacted the Department, which says it “is working to resolve an unforeseen incident affecting the security service contract of the Maritime-Fisheries Vocational Training Institute of the Canary Islands, in Arrecife, arising from circumstances related to the awarded company”.

“Since this situation became known, this department has promoted the appropriate actions to resolve it and guarantee the continuity of the service,” the Department’s response to La Voz continues, although it does not specify deadlines or urgent or long-term measures.
