WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Wichita City Council plans to take up a school safety grant at Tuesday’s meeting.

The Wichita Police Department is asking permission to apply for up to $500,000 from the ‘Federal Cops School Violence Prevention’ program. The money would pay for new school safety and public notification technology that links USD 259 to the police real-time information center, along with Sedgwick County 911.

WPD said the move could speed up response time if there is ever an active shooter at a Wichita school.

The grant requires a 25% city match, which would equal up to $125,000 over three years.
