The police were alerted by online viewers and one of her acquaintances who showed concern about Mina during her livestream on TikTok.

Mina Chan is a renowned ENHYPEN fan from Japan who is residing in South Korea and has more than 80,000 followers on TikTok. Although Mina apologized, online harassment continued, which put her in depression.

Her death was confirmed on August 6 by her own sister, who shared the news of her death through social media. In the post, her sister also reminded everyone that Mina Chan was a kind-hearted person and always kept her sister protected with sisterhood.

The death of Mina is a result of toxic K-pop fandom, as the fans of ENHYPEN kept on bullying and harassing her online. According to local South Korean media, Yongsan Police Station has confirmed the death of Mina, which took place on Wednesday while she was live streaming on TikTok from her residence in Hangangno-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

The police were dispatched when they received a report from one of her acquaintances, and Mina was found dead around 5:33 a.m. on August 5. According to the report, a lot of TikTok users and X account holders tried to intervene and help her. The police are still investigating the exact cause of her death.

The online backlash faced by Mina started with a vague cause and took a bigger turn, which showcases the extremities and the complex thought process of a majority of K-pop fans. Previously, Mina appeared in ENHYPEN’s tour in late July in the USA, where she offered sunflowers to one of the members of the group named Sunoo and asked him to pass them on to another member, Ni-ki. The moment was recorded in a clip, and it soon went viral among the fans.

The fans kept accusing Mina and criticized her for overstepping the boundaries of K-pop idols while seeking personal attention. After a few days of this incident, ENHYPEN’s Ni-ki was found expressing disappointment through a livestream regarding the fans who seek personal attention or try to show off at the venues. Even though he named no one, the fans considered it a targeted comment towards Mina.

With Ni-ki validating the situation, the online users embarked on targeted harassment campaigns against Mina Chan, which took an even bigger shape with overwhelming abusive messages. Her apology and stepping back did not work when it comes to brutal K-pop fans.
