The exercises include Stop the Bleed instruction, active shooter response drills and the annual physical fitness and weapons qualification tests required of sheriff’s deputies.

This year, Barrow County School System Superintendent Dr. Dallas LeDuff participated in the training alongside first responders to gain a firsthand understanding of the preparation required of school resource officers. LeDuff volunteered to complete the deputies’ annual physical fitness and weapons qualification tests.

“It was a humbling honor to experience one difficult piece of what our first responders must be ready for, just in case,” LeDuff said. “The efforts and service of the BCSO and area emergency teams are greatly appreciated and respected. We couldn’t be successful without this critical partnership and support.”

Last year, members of the Barrow County Board of Education attended the training to learn more about the work performed by school resource officers.

Barrow County School System Chief Security Officer John Skinner said the annual exercises are critical to ensuring first responders can respond effectively in an emergency.

“These safety drills and training exercises are key to ensuring our community’s first responders are coordinated and ready to help in our schools as quickly and seamlessly as possible,” Skinner said. “This year, they also added training focused on best practices for assisting students with exceptionalities. The attention and care these teams provide are unmatched.”
