Hyderabad: Actor Nagarjuna has revealed that he too fell victim to a cyber fraud four years ago, after receiving a call from a person claiming to be a bank official who lured him with promises of high returns on an investment scheme.
What happened?
Recalling his experience, Nagarjuna said the caller addressed him by name and tried to gain his confidence by praising his business acumen before pitching an investment scheme promising substantial returns.
Nagarjuna was speaking at ‘Suraksha Ka Tiranga’, a special cyber-awareness programme organised by the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau to educate people about the growing threat of cybercrime.
Representatives of SPARK clubs from across the State and members of the Retired Employees Association participated in the programme.
Actor believed the call was from a genuine bank official
“I too am a cybercrime victim. Four years ago, I was subjected to a cyber fraud,” Nagarjuna said.
He explained that his financial affairs are generally handled by his manager. However, because the caller contacted him directly and presented himself as a bank official, Nagarjuna said he initially believed the call to be genuine.
Actor’s relative also faced scam call
The actor also narrated an incident involving a relative who travelled to Iran for a film shoot.
Shortly after landing at the airport, she received a call from people claiming to be police officers who alleged that narcotic drugs had been found in her baggage. She was instructed to remain in her room and communicate through a video call.
However, having prior awareness about cyber fraud, she immediately contacted the police instead of complying with the callers’ instructions. She subsequently informed Nagarjuna about the incident.
Retirees and senior citizens at high risk
Director General of Police CV Anand, IPS, said retired employees and senior citizens are among those increasingly falling victim to cybercrimes, which is why they are being actively involved in the ‘Suraksha Ka Tiranga’ awareness initiative.
He said the nature of crime had changed significantly, with cyber and narcotics-related offences increasing alongside traditional forms of crime.
40 types of cybercrimes
According to Anand, the Cyber Security Bureau has identified 40 types of cybercrimes, with investment frauds accounting for a significant share. He said cybercriminals continually modify their methods despite efforts by law enforcement to curb such offences.
Anand also urged cybercrime victims not to hesitate to report fraud due to fear of social judgement.
