The investigation into a security breach at Origin Energy that resulted in the release of personal information of almost a million customers is focusing on a former Accenture employee working in Manila, where the electricity and gas giant had outsourced key billing and customer support functions.

The employee, who has now left the consulting firm, had intended to extort the company for money in exchange for the return of the information, multiple people briefed on the matter said on condition of anonymity.
