A former senior Foreign Ministry official, whose family had earlier reported him missing, has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) for the theft of 6,000 visas, allegedly used to facilitate online scam activities.
Tho Samnang was dismissed as Director-General of the General Department of Legal, Consular and Border Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) by Senate President and then-Acting Head of State Hun Sen on April 28.
Samnang was later reassigned as an advisor to MFAIC, with Director‑General rank
His family had initially reported his disappearance to the Chroy Changvar District Police Station.
However, it has since emerged that Samnang was arrested yesterday by the ACU in connection with the facilitation of online scams and taken in for questioning.
Head of ACU and Senior Minister Om Yentieng stated that, “Mr Tho Samnang admitted to illegally stealing more than 6,000 C and Cex visas, and the remaining 4,000 are being sought by the ACU, which he said he destroyed.”
Yentieng added that the visas illegally issued by Samnang were clearly being used by foreigners involved in online scams.
