Olukanyinsola Odebode has ‘attitudes of entitlement’ about his sexual behaviour
A “very predatory” man raped one woman before going on to sexually assault another while on bail.
Olukanyinsola Odebode “humiliated and degraded” his victims then denied any wrongdoing and forced them to go through the ordeal of giving evidence at trial.
Swansea Crown Court heard that since 2019 seven other women had reported concerns about his sexual behaviour to police but those matters had not been proceeded with.
The 30-year-old has now been made subject to an extended sentence as a dangerous offender.
The court heard offences were committed between June 2024 and September 2025 with Odebode sexually assaulting and raping one woman in the Gwent Police area and then after being arrested and released on bail going on to sexually assault a second woman in the Dyfed-Powys Police area.
Mark Wyeth KC, prosecuting, told the court the defendant “humiliated and degraded his victims” and that he poses a danger to women, adding: “There were life-altering consequences for his victims”. For the latest court stories sign up to our crime newsletter
The barrister said a Probation Service report highlighted the defendant’s lack of insight into his offending and his “complete rejection” of the jury’s findings and he said the report concluded that he “poses a high risk of serious harm underpinned by attitudes of entitlement”.
The prosecutor pointed to the impact statements of the victims and to the effect the defendant’s actions have had on their lives and he noted one of the women described Odebode as a “very predatory”.
Olukanyinsola Odebode, of Gainsborough Road, Cefn Golau, Tredegar, had previously been found guilty at trial of one count of rape and two counts of assault by penetration when he returned to the dock for sentencing. He has no previous convictions.
Matt Murphy, for Odebode, said it was to be hoped that while serving his sentence the defendant would develop the insight into his offending which he currently lacked.
Judge Huw Rees said based on everything he had heard about the defendant at trial and read about him in reports he had come to the conclusion that he was a “sexually precocious person”. He noted a series of women had previous raised concerns about the defendant’s sexual behaviour – including allegations of rape, indecent exposure, and sexual assault – as well as stalking but while those matters had been investigated they had not resulted in any convictions.
The judge said Odebode’s behaviour has had a “profound” effect on his two victims and he noted a probation officer had been struck by the defendant’s lack of insight into his offending. The judge said he believed an extended sentence was necessary to address the risk the defendant poses to the public.
Odebode was made subject to a 12-year extended sentence comprising nine years in custody followed by three years on licence. The defendant must serve two-thirds of the custodial element of the sentence before he can apply for release but it will be for the Parole Board to determine if he is safe to be let out.
The defendant will be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.
