The police on Tuesday arrested five members of a gang who allegedly hacked to death a 33-year-old man due to previous enmity near Pagalmedu in Tiruvallur district.

The police identified the victim as Marimuthu, a driver from Chittathur, near Vengal. A few days ago, Marimuthu was booked for allegedly threatening a Tamil Nadu Electricity Board employee with a knife. He was later granted bail. On Tuesday, Marimuthu was returning home on a motorcycle after signing the register at the Vengal police station as part of his bail conditions. The gang, who came by car, rammed his motorcycle and attacked him with knives.

While fleeing, the driver of the car reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the compound wall of a house on the roadside. Locals apprehended three of the suspects and alerted the police. The police arrested the three men and later nabbed two other suspects. They recovered Marimuthu’s body and sent it to the Tiruvallur Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination. A case has been registered, and a probe is under way.

During the preliminary inquiry, the police found that Marimuthu had allegedly been in a relationship with a woman from Keelanur. Following disputes over the relationship, the woman’s husband had allegedly sent her to her mother’s house. The police said she continued to remain in contact with Marimuthu, leading to frequent quarrels at her home. She took her own life last year.

The police suspect that the woman’s brother, identified as Dheena, who held Marimuthu responsible for her death, and his associates murdered Marimuthu.
