At its Aug. 25 meeting, the Bedford County Board of Supervisors approved a $353,808 grant application to the Office on Violence Against Women, a component of the U.S. Department of Justice, to support local cybercrime investigations.
The funding would be used to purchase a special-purpose computer, Magnet AXIOM and GrayKey forensic software, and a multipurpose workstation. The grant also would provide overtime funding for two investigators.
The computer and forensic software would be used to investigate and prosecute cybercrimes against people of all ages as part of the Southern Virginia Crimes Against Children Task Force.
The three-year grant period would begin Sept. 30, 2026.
Sheriff Mike Miller will submit the grant application. Miller told supervisors the program would not require funding from Bedford County.
Citizens speak out against data centers
The Board of Supervisors also heard from eight residents at its Aug. 25 meeting who expressed opposition to data center development in Bedford County.
Several speakers urged the county to adopt at least one ordinance requiring public hearings before data centers could be developed.
No active data center proposals have been submitted to the county.
