BATON ROUGE, La. (WVUE) – Louisiana has agreed to a settlement with Meta over concerns that its apps are addictive to children, according to Attorney General Liz Murrill.
The state will receive $180 million spread out over nine years. Forty-eight other states are also part of the settlement.
The money will go toward things like enforcement to keep predators off the apps that target children.
Meta also vowed to make immediate changes for kids on Facebook and Instagram. The company will institute nighttime blocks, limit school-time access, add more user-friendly parental controls, and more effectively verify kids’ ages.
Murrill said an auditor will track Meta’s compliance with the deal. She expects Meta to start making changes to its platforms within the next 30 days.
The attorney general’s office also took legal action against Snapchat and Discord Wednesday.
Murrill said her office frequently finds predators looking for kids on the apps before moving into private chats.
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Discord said its safety systems combine advanced technology, human-led investigations and user reports to help identify harmful activity.
Snapchat did not respond to a request for comment.
