Kansas is set to receive more than $134 million as part of a $17.1 billion settlement with Meta over claims that Facebook and Instagram harmed children and teenagers.
Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach announced the settlement Wednesday. The agreement involves 47 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
According to the release, states accused Meta of using addictive features that kept young people online and exposing them to mental health risks. Meta also was accused of misleading parents about the safety of its platforms.
Under the settlement, Meta must add new protections for children. These include a two-hour daily limit on Facebook and Instagram, nighttime restrictions, fewer notifications during school hours and stronger age checks.
Meta also must improve parental controls and protections from bullying, eating-disorder content, suicide and self-harm content.
Kansas will receive an additional $6 million related to claims over Meta’s sharing of private Facebook user information, pending court approval.
