Mumbai: Three men were arrested by Kandivli police for taking a gold loan from a financial institution, splurging the funds and then resorting to cybercrime to repay the institution. The trio was involved in a malicious APK file fraud, in which they duped two suburban residents of Rs 6.2 lakh collectively.The accused were identified as Urvish Kumar Patel, Jani Kumar Patel and Ankit Kumar Patel. On May 9, a Kandivli resident received a phone call from an unknown number around 4 pm. The caller told him that his MGL gas metre reading had not been updated. The caller then sent him a malicious APK file and got access to his device screen. A sum of Rs 2.07 lakh was fraudulently withdrawn from the complainant’s bank account.In a separate case on May 7, another Kandivli resident received a call around noon from an unknown person and was asked to clear dues of Rs 12 against his gas metre reading. He was also sent a malicious APK file by the caller and a sum of Rs 4.17 lakh was withdrawn from his bank account.Two separate FIRs were registered by Kandivli police. During the probe, a team headed by senior inspector Karan Sonkavde tracked down the three accused and arrested them.The trio told the police they had taken a loan from a financial institution by mortgaging gold jewellery and splurged the funds. They then resorted to cybercrime and the money earned from it was transferred to the financial institution to get their gold jewellery released. Police have seized the sum of Rs 6.24 lakh that was taken from the two complainants.The case was solved under the supervision of DCP Sandeep Ghuge.
