Agartala, 2nd September 2026 : The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC), headed by Justice Arindam Lodh, has sought supporting documents from a complainant who has demanded a comprehensive safety audit of government schools across the state.
The matter came up before the commission following an email petition submitted by social activist Nemichand Meena of Kalakhana in Rajasthan. The petitioner urged the THRC to take preventive measures to protect the safety, health, dignity, privacy and educational rights of children studying in government schools.
The complaint raised concerns over potentially unsafe school infrastructure, including damaged roofs, walls, floors, staircases and boundary walls. It also flagged possible risks related to electrical systems and playground equipment.
Other concerns included the availability of safe drinking water, separate functional toilets for boys and girls, sanitation and menstrual hygiene facilities, as well as accessibility for students with disabilities.
The petitioner sought an independent physical and technical inspection of schools, covering fire and electrical safety, sanitation, kitchens, playgrounds, first-aid facilities, disaster preparedness and accessibility.
However, the THRC has not yet passed any order on these substantive demands. It has instead directed the complainant to furnish documents supporting the allegations and requests. The matter has been listed for consideration after 15 days.
