A consortium led by Naver Cloud has been selected for a government project to create a foundational artificial intelligence model specializing in cybersecurity in South Korea. Korea Herald reports on the decision by the country’s Ministry of Science and ICT.
Competition between consortia
Naver Cloud, the cloud and AI division of portal operator Naver, outperformed a consortium led by SK Telecom. The ministry said the winner received high marks for broad cooperation between businesses, academic institutions, and research organizations, as well as for its technological capabilities and development strategy.
The Naver Cloud consortium includes 32 companies and institutions, including LG CNS and LG Uplus, as well as major South Korean universities and research organizations.

Resources for development
The government plans to provide the consortium with up to 256 Nvidia B200 graphics processing units over the next 10 months to support the model’s development. The ministry also plans to sign a contract with the consortium later this month, which is expected to pave the way for full-scale development.
A model for South Korea
The project aims to create a sovereign AI model for cybersecurity adapted to South Korea’s security environment. The initiative is linked to growing cyber risks amid the rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies.
