The agency based its operations on detailed financial and technical analysis, including reviewing bank accounts and online access data, to track the proceeds of fraud and identify the beneficiaries and operators of the syndicates.

One case involved a victim at BITS Pilani who was digitally detained for three months and defrauded of Rs 7.67 crore by scammers impersonating police officers. A second case from Gujarat involved a victim defrauded of Rs 19.24 crore after a similar three-month digital detention. The third case concerned a victim in Karnataka digitally held for one month and defrauded of Rs 15.45 crore.

During the searches, the CBI seized banking documents, account records, digital devices and other evidence, which are undergoing forensic examination to uncover the broader financial and technical infrastructure supporting the cybercrime networks.

The agency arrested three individuals in connection with the operations. Their interrogation revealed roles in receiving, layering and dispersing the fraud proceeds.

Akash from Haryana allegedly received Rs 1.95 crore in his account, which he opened himself, and transferred the funds to other accounts on the same day. Raja Karmakar of Kolkata purportedly received Rs 1.5 crore into his firm’s account. Jyoti Rani was also arrested; her account allegedly received part of the defrauded money, some of which she withdrew in cash while transferring the remainder to obscure its trail.

The CBI confirmed efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the network. It reaffirmed its commitment to combating digital arrest crimes and organised cybercrime and bringing perpetrators to justice.

Further investigation into the cases is continuing.
