(NewsNation) — New reporting suggests Iranian hackers are relentlessly trying to get into U.S. critical infrastructure.
There’s a Telegram channel allegedly used by Iranian hackers that vowed on Sunday to target U.S. water, energy and telecommunications sectors.
That comes after at least a dozen states reported cyberattacks on water systems in the last month. The FBI is investigating whether these attacks are linked to Iran.
Iran may be trying to target a wide range of U.S. infrastructure with these cyberattacks. According to a new report from NBC, which uncovered some details about Iranian hacking attempts, those attacks are specifically on U.S. telecommunications and energy.
They’re saying those attempts went after automated systems connected to the internet. Though NBC is told those hacks weren’t actually successful, this comes after widespread Iranian cyberattacks on water systems in at least 12 U.S. states.
Those were uncovered a few weeks ago in states including Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia, New Jersey and South Dakota. In those cases, there was no impact on the safety of the drinking water, but the hackers, it appears, were able to remotely monitor and control water systems.
Those hacks forced the utility operators to switch to manual control, causing temporary disruptions.
These cyberthreats really do present a new challenge in a conflict that we know has now passed the six-month mark, with military strikes picking back up in the last couple of days.
The White House did not comment on the new cyberattack reports, referring NewsNation to the FBI. The FBI has not responded to a request for comment.
