The Ghana Police Service has urged victims of cybercrime and online fraud to report incidents immediately rather than waiting until the next working day, saying delays could make recovery and investigation more difficult.
Terence Ade-Adams, a Digital Forensic Examiner, Cybercrime Investigator and Instructor with the Ghana Police Service, gave the advice during an Asaase Townhall Talk discussion on banking, OTP and mobile money fraud.
He said the Ghana Police Service has a toll-free number, 18555, through which victims can report crimes.
“The mindset of waiting to Monday… to go to the police station to report will not help.”
According to Ade-Adams, personnel within the cybercrime units and online patrol teams work around the clock and can respond to reports.
Police role in digital fraud
Ade-Adams said the Ghana Police Service remains the institution mandated to investigate crime, regardless of whether the offence was committed through a bank, telecommunications network or another digital platform.
“The Ghana Police is the premier institution for investigation of crime.”
He said financial institutions and telecommunications companies can assist in resolving fraudulent transactions, but cases involving criminal conduct may ultimately have to be referred to the police for investigation.
He added that cybercrime investigations may require institutions to provide customer or transaction information through the appropriate legal processes, including court warrants or orders.
Don’t negotiate with scammers
Ade-Adams also advised victims not to call fraudsters to negotiate after discovering that they have been defrauded.
“When fraud happens, don’t try calling the fraudster to negotiate.”
He said such contact could alert criminals that their activity has been detected, prompting them to move the funds more quickly.
