REGINA – Saskatchewan says there’s strong support for limits on kids accessing social media among those who responded to a recent survey.
The government says about 86 per cent of the more than 26,000 who responded support social media limits for children under 16.
Of the 14 per cent who didn’t support an outright ban, just over two-thirds were in favour of requiring some kind of parental consent.
Lori Carr, the province’s mental health and addictions minister, says the results show loud and clear support for restrictions and that the results have been shared with the federal government.
Carr says the survey, costing roughly $180,000, was done through mailed-out cards, rather than online, to make sure it heard directly from people who live in the province.
Ottawa introduced legislation in June that would force social media platforms to block access for children under 16, though they could get an exemption with sufficient safeguards.
