K-pop fandoms are on high alert after Hybe’s global fan platform, Weverse, confirmed a massive personal information breach affecting 422,584 accounts on the night of September 6th. Weverse, a crucial platform for Hybe where global K-pop stars like BTS interact with their fans, has seen user anxiety surge following this incident.
Weverse Company, under the name of CEO Yang Joo-il, issued an official notice acknowledging the leakage of 422,584 pieces of personal information. This announcement came shortly after the company was alerted to the breach by an external report. The notice, which went public last night (the 6th), has rapidly spread throughout the K-pop fandom today (the 7th), becoming a focal point of controversy. The leaked data includes unique ‘internal identification information’ generated within the system when users sign up for Weverse, along with sensitive purchase-related details such as purchase type, payment gateway name, currency type, purchase amount, cancellation amount, purchase date, purchase status, and refund date.
The company attempted to downplay the risk of the leaked ‘internal identification information,’ stating, “Individual identification is impossible, and it cannot be directly used externally, making secondary damage such as payment fraud or unauthorized transfers unlikely.” In addition to this explanation, CEO Yang Joo-il issued an apology, bowing his head to fans: “I sincerely apologize to our fans who have trusted and cherished Weverse for causing great concern and worry due to this incident.” Weverse Company also stated that it has individually notified affected customers whose information was confirmed to be compromised.
