NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The FBI Nashville Field Office is urging older Americans and their families to watch for warning signs of financial fraud.

FBI Nashville said scammers often target seniors because they may have accumulated savings and may be more likely to answer calls or engage with strangers.

Common scams to be aware of

Common scams targeting older people include romance scams, tech-support scams, grandparent scams, government impersonation scams, sweepstakes and lottery scams, home-repair scams and TV or radio scams.

‘Never feel pressured’

The FBI recommends that people independently verify the identity of anyone who contacts them unexpectedly and avoid acting under pressure.

“Never feel pressured to act immediately,” FBI Nashville said. “Scammers often create a false sense of urgency to keep you from thinking things through.”

Here’s what you need to do

The FBI also advises people not to send money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, checks or personal information to anyone they have not independently verified.

People should monitor bank accounts and credit reports for suspicious activity and talk with a trusted family member or friend before responding to an unusual request.

Anyone who believes they or a loved one may be a fraud victim should report the incident to IC3.gov, even if no money was lost.
